Alexander McQueen In LA

Monday, May 5, 2008

Drama! was the idea behind Alexander McQueen’s new store in LA. With double-human sized sculptures inside a white stone-wall cave, the setting for Mcqueens collection is far from modest. Liz Armstrong describes it best….

“No one would judge you too harshly for thinking, upon entering Alexander McQueen’s new store in Los Angeles, that you’d stumbled onto the set of the next Terminator film (the store is in California, after all, with that governor). But no, the boutique’s centerpiece is not a cyborg levitating through the skylight, nor is it a larger-than-life Academy Award. It’s a 9-foot-tall stainless-steel sculpture by British artist Robert Bryce Muir, made to resemble the statue of Jesus looking down over Rio. That’s the kind of epic thinking that went into the futuristic, otherwise stark white space that appears carved from a single block of stone, and where McQueen’s complete collections for women and men can be found. The formula is really quite simple: McQueen + L.A. = action/drama. Next up, a Paris store in 2009. —Liz Armstrong”

For his grand-opening bash May 13, McQueen will dispense with the red carpet. “It’s going to be a blue carpet, actually. The inside will be glowing red - the colors will symbolize the good and the dark.” He said he’s going for a New Orleans lounge vibe where his guests can mingle. “Because I’m not too fond of these openings, I find them quite superficial.” He wanted his friend, crooner Amy Winehouse, to perform for the opening “But she’s having visa problems.” He’s got another lovely on tap to help him host. How handy. Maybe Amy can do the new Paris stores launch instead??
