The girls at Human gallery in NYC have arrived on the scene with such a refreshing energy and attitude that has them attracting the right people and creating some major traction. From curating shows, celebrating female artists and collaborating with global brands and people, this admirable little gallery is turning itself into a multitudinal environment.

As well as encompassing a plethora of art and artists, founders Jill Borenstein and Rachael Yaeger are currently working on launching an e-commerce store, which will feature a collection of their favorite things – all inspired from their travels together. “When you have a shared vision, and vibe well with the right people, the opportunities seem to be endless.”

“I think we’ve identified with our niche for Human – which is to highlight, curate, and work with rad female artists. We’ve had the best time working with such creative women, from the “Babe Show” to “Topless” and now the Billabong x Akila Berjaoui show coming up. We’re so happy to be doing our thing and working with people we believe in, and vice-versa.

…Not to be all hippy-dippy but there’s “Shakti,” which Jill and I have both experience in our yoga practices. It’s this cosmic, empowering energy and that’s genuinely sums up how it feels to be doing what you love. I want to keep going in that direction.”

Tomorrow Human hosts the opening and zine release of one of my favourite photographers, Akila Berjaoui. As her first solo gallery exhibition in NYC with Billabong as a partner, “You better get out of the sun before you melt” Gidget 1959, features a compilation of Akila’s work over the past year shot in various locations including Australia, Italy, Norway, Dubrovnik, Sydney & Morocco. And yes, they’re yum! They’ll have you immediately booking tickets to one these exotic cities in pursue of sampling even a fraction of the divinity captured in each photograph.

Using her camera to capture her personal ups and downs, much like a visual diary, Akila talks of her own work saying,

“…I want to provoke with my photography and have it presented in a natural way. intimate. A little daring, provocative. real. Human. Think French cinema where women have always been represented as equals. What I do is a form of expression. I am privileged to be able to tell stories through images. I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Make sure you all make it along tomorrow! These girls are amazing. Let them know that their efforts and visions are supported and celebrated!
