“I love Downtown Manhattan for its ’80s look. Walking down those streets always wakes a certain nostalgia in me. I loved using that idea as the essence for this story.”

Drawn to the concrete textures and the imposing buildings of Downtown Manhattan, photographer Zaga Skerletovic says the area reminds her of classic films that marked the ’80s. They remind me of scenes from Nine and a Half Weeks, Diane Keaton in her signature suit attire, the energy of Lauren Hutton, and Woody Allen’s love letter to New York City, Manhattan.

It’s not surprising to hear that Zaga’s images are inspired by film, as each of her images tells its own intriguing story. She has beautifully captured those passing moments you encounter when walking down the street yourself – a moment when texture, colour and emotion come together for an instant, then they’re gone again. These images definitely make my heart race, and if they were actually stills from a film, I’d be queuing up for tickets.
