It’s so easy for fashion to get so god-damn serious. People obsessing over details that in the bigger scope of things, really don’t matter…

That’s why I love a girl who knows how to wear colour. The grace of pulling off an outfit that reminds one of the tropics, the sunshine on their back, the festive part of the night, and sweet, fresh fruit. Enter Miss Lucy Folk. A designer who has the most colourful of energies and vision which transcends into bright, sure-to-make-you-smile jewellery.

Yay for wearing something that’s fun and makes you happy!

Anyonegirl got to speak with Miss Folk just before she launched her ‘Tropicalismo’ collection at my favorite Los Angeles store Ten Over Six, where were Brazilian cocktail mixers, a Mexican fruit stall out the front, and Carmen Miranda doppelgängers…..

———-

Who is the Lucy Folk girl?

A girl with style who opts for quirky and colourful, and appreciates design and quality.

Dream destination for a holiday?

India and Sri Lanka..

What are you wearing whilst on holiday?

I really appreciate quality and design, especially when a print is involved! I like zany key pieces and try to work co-ordinates around that, then let me jewels do the talking, so-to speak. Labels like Stella McCartney, Dries Van Noten and Kenzo are beloved faves.

What are you drinking and snacking on while you are on holiday?

Margaritas, Aperol Spritz and Campari / Soda with Whitebait, Insalata Caprese, Carpaccio…YUM!!

And listening to…?

Django Django and Kurt Vile.

I want to know more about your Dad’s cafe growing up! You must have some wonderful memories from there! Any you can share?

Eating meringue mixture, making cold coffee’s and serving them to Dad thinking I was hilarious, washing dishes, devouring delicious cakes and just having a really super time.

Tell us a bit about your process of choosing a theme and turning that into a wearable piece of jewellery.

It varies; my subject matter can be influenced by a particular colour or a material and then I develop the range around that. For example: Tropicalismo was really inspired by a state of mind, a BraziIian vacation with the fruit of the gods and citrus flavors. For my upcoming collection – Pizza – I found some neon-orange glass baguettes at an incredible store in NYC and decided I simply had to make Pepperoni earrings. I incorporated these beads along with Australian opals, Black and White cz’s and a Lucy Folk cast silver peppercorn into resin that was set on a Silver, hand-textured Salami base plate and from there I started to develop the Pizza collection.

Do you find you eat more of that food while you are designing it?

Of course! When one is making copious amounts of jewellery inspired by, let’s say Mexican food, then you can’t help but be inspired to go home and devour the flavours. Hmmm…tacos!

Tell us about where you work from?

I work from an amazing studio space in Melbourne. I have been here for eight years and it has changed dramatically over the course of time. It’s a happy home and we’re situated opposite a Park with a Lawn Bowls club so it’s totally festive in the summer which I love!

Tell us about the event ‘Tropicalismo’ at Ten Over Six in L.A.

I had been curious about the American market for a while and following the success of my Bento collection event at Colette in Paris I knew there wouldn’t be a better place to launch TROPICALISMO than in L.A. We already have several fans of the brand over there (creatives like Miranda July and Arianne Phillips) and so I’m making a homage to the collection at Ten Over Six with Brazilian cocktail mixers, a Mexican fruit stall out the front of the party, and Carmen Miranda doppelgängers serving the most delicious treats!

Why LA? And why Ten Over Six?

This range is all about having fun and it works especially well in a warm climate. Ten Over Six has the kind of energy that I gravitate towards and in the fashion industry it’s a wonderful thing when you can identify a like-minded individual and form a kind of international alliance / connection. I hope it will be the beginning on an ongoing connection with L.A.
