The Standard Hotel in New York have produced a small edition of 50 palm-sized apples with artist Julia Chiang of whom I have mentioned about here. Each handmade of delicate porcelain and glazed a rich glossy red. I love how her work is always very tangible and have a focus around the senses. They remind me of a) Snow White and her pale skin and plum lips, and b) of Christmas tree decorations we used to have in the 80’s and c) of toffee apples at the Easter show, which were always a disappointment due to the fact that they were ALWAYS floury and dry. Pthuk. Never went there again. I would, however, love to own one of these whimsical little apples.

Each piece comes tucked into a special wooden box that’s been burned with the details of the edition. The box is signed and numbered. The new shop (designed by Roman Alonso and Claire Darrow) in the hotel opens 12 February 2010 with Julia working on an installation in the space for the opening.
