Monday’s Muse: Mike Purpos

I have this very image of surfer Mike Purpos framed in my office. How much attitude is oozing from this guy? On the beach, with his Lightning Bolt, Gerry Lopez, board in tow, frogskin Oakley sunglasses on, and that hat (!?) with a feather in it! Legend.

For Monday’s Muse for AnyOne,Girl today I’m dedicating it to Mr. Purpos. I think the guy who supposedly invented the full roundhouse cut-back, possibly started pro-surfing as we know it today, posed nude for Playgirl, wore surf trunks over his wetsuit and was the first to try out Velcro-shoe attachments to his board is most definitely worthy of a bit of a muse, non?

The below images: Doc Albert Ackroyd allowed Purpus and his friends/groupies to live rent free at his beach front home in downtown Hermosa Beach, providing they cleaned their dishes and didn’t allow girls to spend the night. (Seems kind of unlikely with Purpos standing there holding his surfboard which has a naked portrait of his girlfriend at the time, Nancy, painted on the underside?)
