“Collaboration is central to the kaupapa of KAUKAU. The makers, designers and artists we work with are at our core and it is through collaborating that our relationship with them is strengthened. We hope to make our collaborators feel supported to explore new creative territories, and at times provide personal context that can shape their craft. Working in this unique way allows us to cultivate mutually beneficial experiences that can help spawn the next.”
With Lucky Dip for KAUKAU, Prakashan has provided further context with his continued expression of personal identity as a Sri Lankan New Zealander. Sri Lankan dress has always been a common and unique identifier as a migrant growing up here in Aotearoa, and one not often celebrated. This collaboration with Lucky Dip allowed Prakashan to reimagine subcontinent fabrics as shirting linked to his heritage, a recollection of memories and moments that are undeniably Sri Lankan.
