Ophelia King — Blue is Infinite

“If the timings right maybe moments of an over considered hang can be detected, daylight rays beam through a rose in its own sundown, a shooting shard of light dances over a snail testicle as two hands, slightly different, sit alongside each other but not quite together, one in the dark and one in the light.” — Ophelia King

Ophelia King presents her new exhibition Blue is Infinite at Parlour Projects,
showing until May 17th.

This body of work was made entirely whilst living abroad, when I look at these works there is something about them that feels a little foreign. Although the images were chosen to coexist to create a specific mood, the selection is largely sentimental, these works feature lovers and friends, all captured moments shared with another. I often feel that emotion is left out of the critical dialogue of making within contemporary art, it feels the artist too often exists in isolation – for me, without these people and the memories with and of them, the making is a hollow venture.

With colour and fabric partitions, the installation looks to create a more intimate take, allowing the viewer snippets of the wider vantage as they negotiate the space. If the timings right maybe moments of an over considered hang can be detected, daylight rays beam through a rose in its own sundown, a shooting shard of light dances over a snail testicle as two hands, slightly different, sit alongside each other but not quite together, one in the dark and one in the light. Perhaps none of those things are noticed and instead the viewer, maybe, hopefully, ends up, unknowingly, in the corner with my best friend holding his own hands, looking through tumbled pink flowers we only stop for on holiday and the rest is left, for only me to know.
