Youth, rebellion, freedom and grace. Four possible words to extract from the work of photographer Sara Sani. Maybe it comes down to her wanderings, maybe it comes down to her all-nighters and dawn-captured moments, but whatever it is we can instantly respond to her images. Be it from our own moments of growing up, some friends we knew and loved but don’t see much of anymore or that feeling we can relate to of being young, being rebellious, being free and still holding enough grace for the world to except you as you are.

Here is my exclusive interview with the very talented Sara Sani for AnyOne,Girl.

-Where did you grow up? I grew up in Modena, a town in the North of Italy.

-Where do you live now? And why do you choose to live here? At the moment I’m in Milan, I didn’t really choose it, I had enough of Barcelona 24/7 party time but now I’m kind of missing it. I’m still thinking where to move next.

-When did you start taking photos? Well probably during high school, I always had my point and shoot camera with me during school trips.

-Are there any mentors or people of influence that are worth mentioning that have inspired your work? My friend Iris is certainly my first “muse”, I was taking many candid snaps of her when we were living together in Barcelona.

-Most of your images come across as a spontaneous moment captured, what cameras do you like to carry with you always? Some point and shoot cameras that I found at the flea market, I used a Konica Pop and a Pentax for a long time, now I just bought a Contax G1 and I stll have my mum’s manual reflex.

-And what moves you to turn the camera on? The combination between a feeling, an idea and my instinct.

-Is traveling important to you as a photographer? Yeah, I’m a gypsy soul. I like to wander around

-Where is somewhere you would like to visit and why? I don’t like to visit places like a tourist, I like to mix with the locals and get to know their customs. To answer your question: anywhere on heart.

-You said that you are really excited about taking more fashion focused images at the moment, can you tell us what sparked this enthusiasm? Because I’m in Milan I guess and I like feminine beauty.

-Film or Digital? Film of course.

-What are your thoughts on photoshop and the increase of digitally enhanced images? I don’t like that, digital doesn’t move my imagination

-Thoughts on the internet as an artist? Thanks to the internet!

-Anything exciting coming up that you would like to share!? I hope so, but I won’t tell you cos I’m superstitious.

-Favourite fashion brand? Stussy for the vibe, has been my fav since the late ’90s.

-Favourite artist? Salvador Dalí. Of the contemporary artists I follow Parra, Blu, Andrè…

-Fav music? No I don’t have a fav kind of music, I listen to many different genres, from Pavarotti to Die Antwoord, depends how I feel.

Favourite past time when you’re not taking photos? Have dinner at home with my friends then go to a good club. Have a couple of drinks, dance until the night peaks and it’s all a downhill from there. When the club close at 6am hang out with my friends until late in the morning.
