When I was about eleven I chopped off all my hair because I was enthralled with an image I had of Drew Barrymore on my wall. It was 1994 and in this particular image she had chopped short hair with frosted tips and daisy clips. Now that I think back on that move, it wasn’t the haircut I was after, it was the essence of that girl in the picture: the epitome of flower-power-meets-grunge. In fact, she claims the most grunge title of them all; acting as godmother to Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love’s child, Francis Bean. I think it is safe to say that the free-loving, wildly-streaked spirit of hers will forever be embedded in the 90s.

Having been in the limelight since she was just a lil’ whippet, we got to fall in love with her as the adorable pig-tailed girl in E.T., watch her grow up and experiment in Boys On The Side, and admire her sophistication as an established actress in the complex role for Grey Gardens. I have to say though, I loved her best in her Levi’s, dark red lips and sporting those classic-’80s curls. Yeah, Drew, you’re the ultimate crush.
